According to Norse mythology (subset of Germanic mythology), Yggdrasill or the World Tree, was an immense tree that supported the universe with its roots  connecting the nine Nordic worlds. 
The tree was deemed at  the center of universe and the deep roots held  on to the worlds and  every iota of existence.  This connection considers the idea that a tree is  nourishing and  life-giving.
